TMC2208, TMC2209, TMC2100, DRV8834, DRV8880
Five more stepper driver carriers in the A4988's 16-pin StepStick footprint: STEP and DIR in, two coil currents out. Aliases: SilentStepStick, TMC2209, DRV8834.
Each takes STEP and DIR like the A4988 and DRV8825, and each
differs in what its mode pins mean, what is left alone, and how to wake it.
Which one is which
| Part | Motor supply | Left alone | Wake it |
|---|---|---|---|
tmc2208 |
5.5 V to 35 V | 1/8 step | nothing to link; EN low (or unwired) runs it |
tmc2209 |
5.5 V to 29 V | 1/8 step | as the TMC2208 |
tmc2100 |
5.5 V to 46 V | 1/16 step | as the TMC2208 |
drv8834 |
2.5 V to 10.8 V | 1/4 step | drive SLP high |
drv8880 |
6.5 V to 45 V | 1/8 step | drive SLP high |
The Trinamic boards take their logic supply on VIO (3 V to 5.25 V) and read their
inputs at 0.3 and 0.7 of it. The two TI chips make their own logic rail and read
fixed levels: 0.7 V and 2.0 V on the DRV8834, 0.6 V and 1.6 V on the DRV8880.
Mode pins
TMC2208, MS2 MS1: 00 1/8, 01 1/2, 10 1/4, 11 1/16.
TMC2209, MS2 MS1: 00 1/8, 01 1/32, 10 1/64, 11 1/16. The same pins as the
TMC2208, different steps: a sketch moved between the two turns a different distance.
TMC2100: CFG1 and CFG2 are each low, high or open, nine settings from
two pins. Both low is full step, CFG1 high alone 1/2, CFG2 high alone 1/4, both
high 1/16, both open 1/16.
DRV8834: M0 is low, high or open, M1 low or high (pulled down). Full, 1/2,
1/4 (M0 open), then 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 with M1 high.
DRV8880: M1 and M0 are both three-level, M1 pulled down on the carrier, so
unwired is 1/8. TRQ1 TRQ0 turn the current down to 75, 50 or 25 percent.
The current limit
| Part | Peak current |
|---|---|
tmc2209, tmc2100 |
VREF / 2.5 V x 0.325 V / (0.11 Ω + 0.02 Ω): 1.77 A RMS at 2.5 V |
tmc2208 |
Watterott's 1.64 A RMS at 2.5 V on the same resistors |
drv8834 |
VREF / (5 x 0.1 Ω): twice VREF |
drv8880 |
VREF x TRQ / (6.6 x 0.2 Ω) |
What it does not model
The Trinamic chips' UART (PDN_UART), stealthChop, spreadCycle (SPREAD),
StallGuard, the standstill power-down and the 1/256 interpolation: one pulse on
STEP is one step at the pins' resolution. On the TMC boards EN unwired is taken
as on, from the chips' input pulls, which the boards' pin pages do not state. The
DRV8834's phase/enable mode (CONFIG low), the DRV8880's AutoTune and its V3P3
and TOFF pins. As on the A4988: the chopper's ripple, inductance, faults and heat.
See it in action
TMC2209 stepper driver turns a NEMA 17 one turn each way at 1/8 step from an Uno. Open it at /templates.
The stepper speed control with a TMC2209 and a knob sets the speed and direction from a potentiometer with AccelStepper, eases every change and turns the outputs off when it stops.
